Size chart
No other North America duck has the body shape of a pintail, either on the water or in the air. It holds its long slender neck erect and its long pointed tail at an upward angle on the water. It has a long white neck with white "fngers" extended upward on both sides behind their face. In flight pintails are long and slender with a white trailing edge on the inner wing.
The pintail enjoys a wider distribution than any other species of waterfowl. Its breeding grounds stretch across virtually all of the Northern Hemisphere. It seems to have no preference and can change breeding areas every year.
Pintails breed shortly after one year. They are monogamous. Their nests consist in a hollow in the ground lined with loose vegetation, down and feathers. They lay seven to nine eggs on average. After about 22 days of incubation, they all hatch within 8 hours. Soon after, the ducklings follow their mother to the water.
Pintails feed on grain, water weeds and a small quantity of insects or other animal food.
